As we pass the halfway point of fall semester, campus life for veterinary students is heating up. On October 15, the window opened for the first round of NAVLE testing dates. Fourth years are preparing for and taking the test that will open the door to their new career. What does this mean for the privately-owned practices? It means now is the time to begin your interviewing process of the burgeoning new grads.

How should owners proceed during this crucial point for students?

  • Identify potential candidates and conduct first round interviews – As students study in earnest for the NAVLE, the time is ripe to identify possible candidates for your clinic. Conducting interviews now will allow you a head start in identifying your top choices and propel you to the top of their list.

  • Schedule in-person interviews post-testing – Most candidates who are taking their NAVLE now will have a block of open time post-test to visit your clinic. With the weight of the NAVLE behind them, they will be mentally prepared to participate in in-person interviews, especially days when they can shadow you in your facility. This valuable time allows the students to see what the procedures are that make your clinic successful, how you will mentor them, and what the overall culture is at your practice. It will allow you to see how they operate daily, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and determine if they fit your defined culture.

While fourth year students are at the make-or-break point in their education, first through third year students are using this Fall to lay the groundwork for their future. As they investigate the choices before them, many participate in on-campus DVM Consulting and Recruiting lecture as a tool to educate themselves about their post-grad options. Led by Veterinary University Liaison, Jake Audette, the most popular talk is “The Differences between Private and Corporate Practices” seminar. Here, students receive in-depth information on these and other essential areas:

  • Payment Structure
  • Leadership Styles
  • Cultural Values
  • The ways in which DVM Consulting and Recruiting can help with their eventual job search.

While this seminar is the most requested by schools, DVM Consulting and Recruiting also has seminars on contracts, student loan repayment, and more. Students who participate in these lectures are more knowledgeable and prepared for their interview and hiring opportunities when the time is right.
