Prioritizing At Work

A man is standing in front of many post it notes

Do you ever feel you have too much on your plate? With technology now you can be in multiple places at once, without even leaving your office. And multitasking is not seen as a skillset, it’s a necessity. That means knowing how to prioritize your many tasks is a must.

Feel lost when it comes to prioritization? You’re not alone. Understanding how to rank your daily tasks at work does not come easily to everyone. Here are some tips found in an article on indeed.com:

  1. Decide which tasks are most important – whether it’s a critical assignment, something with a tight deadline, or a daily or weekly task, making a list ranking what to do each day, in order of importance, is beneficial to getting it all done
  2. Put your tasks in a calendar – use a digital calendar on your phone or computer, a paper calendar you hang in your office, or all of the above to stick to your timely tasks)
  3. Set boundaries - when necessary, consider turning off your ringer, tuning out your email, and hanging a do not disturb sign on your door when tackling tasks that must be completed in a timely manner
  4. Delegate when possible – consider handing off an assignment to an associate or support staff if you are not able to complete it on time

As managers or clinic owners, the daily tasks you face might not be easy to hand off. For you, it’s even more necessary to keep track of your work outside of the exam room to allow yourself, or your staff, enough time to get the work done.
